I heard from the lady who runs Family Dog Obedience and Rally classes a few weeks ago. I had taught 'traditional' obedience with her years ago; over the past year I took classes from her with Sasha & it's where I'm taking one of my classes with Nietzsche (my profile dog). The woman (Linda) and I were in a series of Nose Work classes run at another facility - she with her Collie and me with Sasha.
On February 28, she and I are going to begin teaching Nose Work classes. I am creating handouts for each class for 8 weeks plus an outline to work (teach) from.
Canine Nose Work, as we practice it, was created by the three founders of the National Association of Canine Scent Work (or NACSW). Their names are Ron Gaunt, Amy Herot and Jill-Marie O'Brien. They created a series of classes, and then ran them locally (near Los Angeles). From those classes, they created a way to test or trial what the dogs have learned, and created a method to certify instructors (CNWI for Certified Nose Work Instructor).
For now, I'm setting up an Introduction to Nose Work 8 week class (though we really hope that students will run through that twice & give the dogs a strong foundation to work from). Once I have that paperwork lined up, I'll work on an Introduction to Odor 8 week class, and after that, an 8 week Continuing Nose Work class (which students should run through a few times, if they want to work different odors/scents). There might be a final class (Master Nose Work), for students interested in honing the skills they've all ready learned.
